Overview

The Battle of Frauenfeld was a military encounter during the War of the Second Coalition (1799-1802). It took place on 25 May 1799 between Austrian and French troops. The battle ended in the evening with the retreat of the Austrians, but on the following day the French withdrew.

Significance

The Battle of Frauenfeld on 25 May 1799 was a limited engagement between French and Austrian forces during the Swiss campaign of the War of the Second Coalition. Although the Austrians retreated by the evening, the French themselves withdrew the following day, leaving neither side in clear possession of the field. The engagement inflicted roughly 1,450 casualties on the Austrian force of approximately 10,000, against a French strength of around 23,000. The inconclusive outcome — Austrian retreat followed by French withdrawal — illustrates the fluid and contested nature of operations in Switzerland during this phase of the coalition war, where tactical success did not necessarily translate into durable positional advantage.
