Battle of Gotthard Pass

Overview

The battle of (the) Gotthard Pass, also known as the battle of the St. Gotthard Pass or the battle of the St. Gotthard, saw an Imperial Russian army commanded by Field Marshal Alexander Suvorov supported by two Austrian brigades attack a French division under General of Division Claude Lecourbe. The same day brought clashes at the Oberalp Pass (Oberalpsee) and Hospental.

Significance

The Battle of Gotthard Pass was part of Suvorov's Swiss campaign during the War of the Second Coalition, in which Russian forces sought to link up with other Coalition armies operating in Switzerland. The engagement saw a substantially larger Russian force, supported by Austrian brigades, press against a French division under Lecourbe at one of the principal Alpine crossings. Simultaneous clashes the same day at the Oberalp Pass and Hospental indicate the scale of Russian operational pressure across multiple mountain routes. The battle formed a critical test of the Coalition's ability to push through heavily defensible Alpine terrain against French positions guarding the interior of Switzerland.
