Significance

The Battle of Montaigu on 21 September 1793 resulted in a Vendéen victory over Republican forces during the War in the Vendée. Republican France committed approximately 7,000 troops against a Vendéen force of around 20,000 under commanders including François de Charette and the Marquis de Lescure, suffering some 2,000 casualties. The engagement demonstrated the continued capacity of Royalist insurgents to inflict significant losses on Republican armies in the Vendée theater, sustaining the insurrection through the autumn of 1793 at a moment when the Republic was under pressure on multiple fronts.
