Battle of Millesimo

Overview

The Battle of Millesimo, fought on 13 and 14 April 1796, was the name that Napoleon Bonaparte gave in his correspondence to one of a series of small battles that were fought in Liguria, Northern Italy between the armies of France and the allied armies of the Habsburg monarchy and of the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont.

Significance

The Battle of Millesimo was one of a series of small engagements fought in Liguria, Northern Italy during Napoleon Bonaparte's opening campaign against the allied forces of the Habsburg monarchy and the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont. French forces numbered roughly 9,000 against a Sardinian force of approximately 4,000, and Sardinian casualties of 2,000–3,000 against French losses of around 1,000 indicate a lopsided outcome. The battle formed part of a sequence of actions through which France pressed its advantage in the region, keeping pressure on the allied coalition at a moment when Napoleon was consolidating operational control in northern Italy during the War of the First Coalition.
