Significance

The Battle of Mesoten, fought near Mežotne in the Courland Governorate, was a multi-day operation conducted between the Russian Corps of Finland under Steinheil and the Prussian Auxiliary Corps under Yorck von Wartenburg, a French-allied formation. Spanning several separate engagements between late September and early October 1812, it formed part of the wider peripheral theater of the French invasion of Russia, where Russian forces sought to contain or dislodge coalition forces operating in the Baltic region. Russian casualties of 4,000 against Prussian losses of 1,250 indicate a costly outcome for the Russian side, though no decisive result is recorded. The engagement is notable in that it brought a Prussian auxiliary force—one fighting in support of Napoleon—into direct sustained contact with Russian regulars at a moment when the main campaign was reaching its crisis at Moscow. Yorck's corps, which later became central to the Prussian defection from the French alliance at the Convention of Tauroggen in December 1812, was a significant actor in this theater throughout the campaign.
