The Battle of Mansilla de las Mulas, fought on 30 December 1808, was a pursuit action in which Soult's corps caught and struck la Romana's withdrawing Spanish force near León. The engagement inflicted roughly 1,500 casualties on the Spanish side — half their engaged strength — against a French force of 2,200. The result further degraded the Army of the Marquis of la Romana at a moment when Spanish regular forces in the north were already under severe pressure from the broader French offensive on the Iberian Peninsula. By overrunning the rear guard, Soult disrupted la Romana's capacity to screen or reconstitute his corps in the immediate aftermath, tightening French operational control over the León corridor during the winter campaign of 1808–1809.
