Overview

In the Battle of Mansilla or Battle of Mansilla de las Mulas on 30 December 1808 an Imperial French corps led by Nicolas Soult caught up with a Spanish corps commanded by Pedro Caro, 3rd Marquis of la Romana. Soult's cavalry under Jean Baptiste Marie Franceschi-Delonne overran la Romana's rear guard led by General Martinengo. Mansilla de las Mulas is a town located 17 kilometres (11 mi) southeast of León, Spain. The combat occurred during the Peninsular War, part of the Napoleonic Wars.

Significance

The Battle of Mansilla de las Mulas, fought on 30 December 1808, was a pursuit action in which Soult's corps caught and struck la Romana's withdrawing Spanish force near León. The engagement inflicted roughly 1,500 casualties on the Spanish side — half their engaged strength — against a French force of 2,200. The result further degraded the Army of the Marquis of la Romana at a moment when Spanish regular forces in the north were already under severe pressure from the broader French offensive on the Iberian Peninsula. By overrunning the rear guard, Soult disrupted la Romana's capacity to screen or reconstitute his corps in the immediate aftermath, tightening French operational control over the León corridor during the winter campaign of 1808–1809.

Tactics

Soult's cavalry under Franceschi-Delonne drove into la Romana's rear guard, commanded by General Martinengo, overrunning it. The action was principally a cavalry pursuit that struck the trailing Spanish elements before they could consolidate or withdraw in good order.
