Battle of Maloyaroslavets

Overview

The Battle of Maloyaroslavets took place on 24 October 1812 as part of the French invasion of Russia. Armies were evenly matched in the battle and suffered similar casualties, with a marginal edge going to the Franco-Italian army. It was Mikhail Kutuzov's decisive battle to force Napoleon to retreat northwest over Mozhaisk to Smolensk on the devastated route of his advance with a higher probability of starvation. Kutuzov's next attack against the remnants of the Grande Armée, the Battle of Krasnoi, began on 15 November 1812, three weeks later.

Significance

The Battle of Maloyaroslavets, fought on 24 October 1812, proved a strategic turning point in the French invasion of Russia despite roughly equal forces and comparable casualties on both sides. Although the Franco-Italian army held a marginal tactical edge, Kutuzov achieved his principal objective: compelling Napoleon to retreat northwest through Mozhaisk toward Smolensk along the same devastated route the Grande Armée had already stripped bare during its advance. That decision condemned the retreating French force to a corridor offering little sustenance and maximum attrition. Three weeks later, Kutuzov resumed offensive pressure at the Battle of Krasnoi on 15 November 1812, engaging what by then were the remnants of the Grande Armée. Maloyaroslavets thus set the conditions for the systematic destruction of French combat power during the withdrawal, making it one of the most consequential engagements of the campaign in terms of strategic consequence relative to its tactical result.
