Significance
The Battle of Lundby, fought south of Lundby in northeast Himmerland, was the last engagement of the Second Schleswig War. Despite involving only company-sized forces on each side, it ended the war on a costly note for Denmark, with the Danish force suffering heavy losses in the closing action of the conflict. The outcome encapsulated the broader Danish experience of the war: a smaller force absorbing disproportionate casualties against a Prussian enemy fighting from prepared positions.
Tactics
A Danish company of the First Regiment advanced with a head-on bayonet charge down a long hillside toward the Prussian position. The Prussians were lying in cover behind an earth dike at the base of the slope. The Danish charge was stopped approximately 20 meters short of the dike, leaving the attackers exposed in the open while the defenders retained the protection of their earthwork.
