Battle of Luçon

Overview

The final Battle of Luçon was fought on 14 August 1793 during the French Revolutionary Wars, between forces of the French Republic under Augustin Tuncq and Royalist forces under Maurice d'Elbée. The engagement on 14 August, fought near the town of Luçon in Vendée, France, was actually the conclusion of three engagements between the Vendean insurgents and the Republican French. On 15 July, Claude Sandoz and a garrison of 800 had repulsed 5,000 insurgents led by d'Elbee. On 28 July, Augustin Tuncq drove off a second attempt. Two weeks later, Tunq and his 10,000 men routed 30,000 insurgents under the personal command of Francois-Athanese Charette.

Significance

The Battle of Luçon on 14 August 1793 was the third and decisive engagement in a sequence of Royalist attempts to seize the town of Luçon in the Vendée. Republican forces had repulsed an initial assault by around 5,000 insurgents on 15 July, then turned back a second attempt on 28 July. The final engagement saw Tuncq's 10,000 Republicans rout a Royalist force of some 30,000 under Charette's personal command, inflicting approximately 5,000 casualties. The repeated failure to take Luçon denied the Vendean insurgency a significant Republican-held position in the region. The scale of the losses in the third engagement represented a substantial blow to Royalist strength at a stage when the broader Vendée uprising was contending with increasingly organized Republican opposition.
