Battle context
The Battle of Lipany, fought on 30 May 1434 approximately 40 kilometres east of Prague, virtually ended the Hussite Wars. The engagement pitted the Bohemian League — an alliance of moderate Hussite nobility and Catholics — against the radical Taborite and Orphan forces under Prokop the Great and Jan Čapek of Sány. The League's victory broke the military power of the radical Hussite factions that had dominated the Bohemian conflict since 1419, effectively removing Prokop the Great, the principal commander of the radical cause, from the field. By eliminating the armed capacity of the Taborites and Orphans, Lipany cleared the way for a negotiated settlement to a war that had consumed Bohemia for fifteen years and withstood multiple crusading expeditions. The battle thus represented a decisive internal rupture within the Hussite movement, with moderate and conservative forces rather than external Catholic armies delivering the blow that concluded the conflict.
