Battle of Lipantitlán

Significance

The Battle of Lipantitlán, fought along the Nueces River in November 1835, was part of the early Texas Revolution campaign to consolidate Texian control over Mexican military installations in the region. Following the Texian victory at Goliad, only two Mexican garrisons remained in Texas: Fort Lipantitlán near San Patricio and the Alamo Mission at San Antonio de Béxar. Texian commander Philip Dimmitt moved against Lipantitlán to prevent it from serving as a staging point for a Mexican counteroffensive to retake Goliad and to secure the release of two imprisoned Texian soldiers. The operation, led by Captain Ira Westover, reflected the broader Texian effort to eliminate remaining Mexican military footholds and secure the territorial gains made in the opening phase of the revolution.
