Battle of Leliefontein

Significance

The Battle of Leliefontein took place on 7 November 1900 at the Komati River, approximately 30 kilometres south of Belfast, at the site of the present-day Nooitgedacht Dam. The engagement involved British-Canadian forces under Horace Smith-Dorrien and François Lessard against Boer forces commanded by Joachim Fourie, Johann Grobler, and Hendrik Frederik Prinsloo of the South African Republic. The battle occurred during the later phase of the Second Boer War, a period in which conventional Boer resistance had largely given way to guerrilla operations across the Transvaal. Beyond its geographic placement along the Komati River corridor south of Belfast, the inputs do not record force sizes, casualties, or a formal outcome, limiting assessment of its operational consequences within the broader campaign.
