Battle context
The Battle of Le Mans secured German control over western France during the Franco-Prussian War. Despite fielding a larger force of 88,000 against the German 73,000, French forces under Chanzy suffered roughly 6,000 casualties against the German 3,500, and the defeat ended organized French resistance in the western theater. Coming in January 1871 as the war entered its final weeks, the victory eliminated the Loire Army as a viable fighting force and removed any remaining possibility of a French relief effort from the west, consolidating the strategic encirclement that would compel France toward armistice.
