The Battle of Las Guásimas, fought in Camagüey, Cuba, stands as a significant Cuban separatist victory during the Ten Years' War. A rebel force of 2,050, commanded by Máximo Gómez, inflicted 1,037 casualties on a Spanish force of 5,000 supported by 6 cannons over five days of fighting. The outcome demonstrated that Cuban separatist forces could sustain prolonged engagement against a numerically superior and better-equipped Spanish army. With rebel casualties of 174 against Spanish losses more than six times that figure, the battle illustrated the operational effectiveness of the insurgent leadership under Gómez and Maceo, and underscored the difficulty Spain faced in suppressing the separatist movement in the interior of Cuba.
