The Battle of Jemappes, fought near Mons in the Austrian Netherlands, was one of the first major offensive engagements of the War of the First Coalition and a significant early victory for the French Republic. The Armée du Nord, composed heavily of inexperienced volunteers, defeated a substantially smaller but regular Austrian force, demonstrating that republican mass mobilization could overcome professional standing armies.
