The Battle of Ivry on 14 March 1590 was a decisive engagement during the French Wars of Religion, pitting Henry IV of France and his allied English forces against the Catholic League under the Duc de Mayenne, supported by Spanish forces under the Count of Egmont. Henry's army of 12,000 faced a Catholic League force of approximately 13,000, inflicting some 6,000 casualties on the League. The victory was strategically consequential: it cleared the way for Henry to advance on and lay siege to Paris, bringing him closer to consolidating royal authority over France. The presence of Spanish forces alongside the Catholic League illustrates the degree to which the French Wars of Religion had drawn in external powers, with Spain supporting the confessional opposition to Henry's claim to the throne. Ivry thus represented a major turning point in Henry's campaign to assert control over the kingdom against both domestic and foreign-backed resistance.
