Significance
The Battle of Itea was a naval engagement fought in the Gulf of Corinth during the Greek War of Independence. A small Greek squadron under British Philhellene Frank Abney Hastings conducted a raid against an Ottoman fleet anchored near Itea. The engagement represents one of the operations in which Philhellene officers played a direct command role in Greek naval efforts against Ottoman forces during the war.
