Battle of Hubbardton

Significance

The Battle of Hubbardton was fought during the American rear-guard action following the American withdrawal from Fort Ticonderoga, as part of the broader Saratoga campaign. British forces under Simon Fraser caught the American rear guard on the morning of July 7, 1777, making it the only battle of the American Revolution fought on Vermont soil — a territory then in disputed status, claimed by New York, New Hampshire, and the de facto independent government of Vermont known as the New Hampshire Grants. The engagement occurred within the larger strategic context of the Saratoga campaign, in which British forces were pressing southward through the Lake Champlain corridor. The outcome of Hubbardton bore directly on the pace and cohesion of the American retreat, with American casualties of roughly 230 against British losses of 141–168 from a force of just over 1,000 men.
