Battle of Gundet

Overview

The Battle of Gundet or Guda Gudi was fought from 14-16 November 1875 between the Ethiopian Empire and the Khedivate of Egypt in what is now Eritrea. It was the first major battle of the Ethiopian–Egyptian War and ended in the near annihilation of the Egyptian army.

Significance

The Battle of Gundet was the first major engagement of the Ethiopian–Egyptian War and ended in the near annihilation of the Egyptian force. Of the 2,500 Egyptian troops committed, approximately 2,000 became casualties, representing a catastrophic loss. Fought in what is now Eritrea, the battle established from the outset that the Khedivate's military expansion into the region would face determined and effective resistance from the Ethiopian Empire under Yohannes IV and Shaleqa Alula. The scale of the Egyptian defeat in the opening engagement significantly shaped the trajectory of the wider conflict.
