Battle context
The Battle of Guararapes, fought on February 19, 1649, was an engagement between West India Company (WIC) forces and those of the Kingdom of Portugal during the Dutch–Portuguese War. The WIC fielded a numerically superior force of 3,500 against a Portuguese force of 2,600, yet sustained recorded casualties of 1,045. The Portuguese side was led by multiple commanders — Francisco Barreto, Filipe Camarão, Henrique Dias, and Vidal de Negreiros — against the WIC's Van Den Brinck. The scale of WIC losses relative to the size of the engagement points to a significant Portuguese battlefield success within the broader contest over Portuguese Brazil that defined this phase of the Dutch–Portuguese War.
