Battle of Grijó

Overview

The Battle of Grijó ended in victory for the Anglo-Portuguese Army commanded by Lieutenant-General Sir Arthur Wellesley over the French army commanded by Marshal Nicolas Soult during the Second French invasion of Portugal in the Peninsular War. The next day, Wellesley drove Soult from Porto in the Second Battle of Porto.

Significance

The Battle of Grijó resulted in a victory for the Anglo-Portuguese Army under Wellesley over Soult's French forces during the Second French invasion of Portugal. With a numerical advantage of roughly 18,000 against 7,000, Wellesley inflicted approximately 200 French casualties while sustaining 104 of his own. The engagement proved immediately consequential: the following day, Wellesley drove Soult from Porto in the Second Battle of Porto, making Grijó a direct operational precursor to the recapture of that city. Together, the two engagements effectively ended the Second French invasion of Portugal.
