Battle of Graz

Overview

The Battle of Graz took place on 24–26 June 1809 between an Austrian corps commanded by Ignaz Gyulai and a French division led by Jean-Baptiste Broussier. The French were soon reinforced by a corps under Auguste Marmont. The battle is considered a French victory though Gyulai was successful in getting supplies to the Austrian garrison of Graz before the two French forces drove him away from the city. Graz, Austria is located 145 kilometres (90 mi) south-southwest of Vienna at the intersection of the modern A2 and A9 highways.

Significance

The Battle of Graz, fought over three days in late June 1809, pitted an Austrian corps under Ignaz Gyulai against a French division under Jean-Baptiste Broussier, later reinforced by Auguste de Marmont's corps. Despite a substantial numerical advantage — roughly 15,000 Austrians against 5,000 French at the outset — Gyulai's force suffered around 2,000 casualties and was ultimately driven away from the city. The engagement is recorded as a French victory, though Gyulai achieved a limited operational objective: delivering supplies to the Austrian garrison holding Graz before being expelled. Graz, situated some 145 kilometres south-southwest of Vienna, held strategic value as a regional center, and the French effort to deny it to Austrian forces reflected broader pressure on Habsburg positions in the interior during the 1809 campaign. The reinforcement of Broussier by Marmont proved the decisive factor in shifting the balance against the larger Austrian force.
