Battle of Fleurus

Overview

The Battle of Fleurus, fought on 1 July 1690 near Fleurus, then part of the Spanish Netherlands, now in modern Belgium, was a major engagement of the Nine Years' War. A French army led by Marshall Luxembourg defeated an Allied force under Waldeck.

Significance

The Battle of Fleurus, fought on 1 July 1690, set the forces of France under François-Henri de Luxembourg against a Dutch Republic army commanded by Georg Friedrich of Waldeck. Force sizes were roughly matched, with France fielding between 30,000 and 40,000 troops and the Dutch Republic between 30,000 and 38,000. The disparity in casualties — French losses of 6,000–7,000 against Dutch losses estimated between 11,000 and 21,000 — indicates a substantial French tactical success within the Nine Years' War. A defeat of that scale to Waldeck's force would have materially weakened the Dutch Republic's capacity to sustain operations in the Low Countries theater, reinforcing French operational dominance under Luxembourg at a critical phase of the conflict.
