The Battle of El Roble, fought on the Itata River on 17 October 1813, produced a surprise patriot victory that nonetheless fractured the independence movement. The outcome is directly attributed to Bernardo O'Higgins' actions late in the engagement, which overshadowed the overall command of José Miguel Carrera. Rather than consolidating patriot unity, the battle precipitated a change in patriot command and opened a severe split within the movement — a division between Carrera and O'Higgins that would weigh on Chilean patriot operations through the remainder of the independence struggle.
