Battle context
The Battle of Ekau was an engagement during the opening phase of the French invasion of Russia in 1812. Forces of the X Corps under French command, holding a numerical advantage of roughly 7,000 against a Russian force of 3,000 to 4,000, defeated the Russian defenders under General Friedrich von Löwis of Menar, inflicting casualties estimated between 320 and 600 on the Russian side. The engagement formed part of the broader French effort to advance into Russian-held territory in the war's early weeks, when Napoleon's forces were still pressing their initial operational momentum across multiple axes.
