Battle context

The Battle of Dwarsvlei, fought on 11 July 1900 in the Krugersdorp district of the South African Republic, was one of several concurrent engagements that marked the Boer transition to guerrilla warfare under Koos de la Rey's strategy. Occurring on the same day as the battles at Silkaatsnek and Onderstepoort, Dwarsvlei reflected a coordinated or at least simultaneous pressure on British forces across the region. The multiplication of engagements on a single day illustrated the operational character of the new Boer approach: dispersed, mobile actions rather than set-piece confrontations. This shift, of which Dwarsvlei was a part, would define the final and most protracted phase of the Second Boer War, extending the conflict well beyond the fall of Boer urban centers and forcing the British to adapt their campaign accordingly.
