Battle of Dorylaeum

Overview

The Battle of Dorylaion or Dorylaeum took place during the First Crusade on 1 July 1097 between the crusader forces and the Seljuk Turks, near the city of Dorylaion in Anatolia. Though the Turkish forces of Kilij Arslan nearly wiped out the Crusader contingent of Bohemond of Taranto, other Crusaders arrived just in time to reverse the course of the battle.

Significance

The Battle of Dorylaeum on 7 July 1097 was an engagement between the Crusader forces of the First Crusade and the Sultanate of Rûm. The Crusader army, commanded by Bohemond of Taranto and Robert Curthose and numbering around 20,000, faced a Seljuk force of approximately 7,000 under Kilij Arslan and Gazi Gümüshtigin. Casualties were substantial on both sides — roughly 4,000 Crusaders and 3,000 Seljuk troops — indicating a hard-fought contest.
