Battle of Domažlice

The Battle of Domažlice or Battle of Taus or Battle of Tausch was fought on 14 August 1431 as the part of the 5th crusade against Hussites. The crusade was sent to Bohemia after negotiations, held in Pressburg and Cheb, between Hussites and the emperor Sigismund had failed.

Significance

The Battle of Domažlice, fought on 14 August 1431, was part of the Fifth Crusade against the Hussites, dispatched to Bohemia after diplomatic negotiations at Pressburg and Cheb between the Hussite movement and Emperor Sigismund broke down. The crusading force, numbering between 30,000 and 50,000 troops under Frederick of Brandenburg, Cardinal Cesarini, and Albert of Habsburg, substantially outnumbered the Hussite army of approximately 20,000 led by Prokop the Bald and Sigismund Korybut, yet the crusade suffered around 1,500 casualties. The engagement represented another in a sequence of failed crusading efforts against the Hussite movement during the Hussite Wars, reflecting the persistent inability of the assembled Catholic powers to suppress the Bohemian reform movement by military force despite commanding larger armies.
