Battle of Dhale

Significance

The Battle of Dhale was a contest for control of Dhale city and its surrounding area during the broader Yemeni Civil War of 2014. The engagement pitted Houthi forces and Yemen Army units loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh against militiamen and Yemen Army units aligned with the internationally recognized government of Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi. Control of Dhale held operational relevance within the wider conflict, as both coalitions sought to consolidate territorial footholds across Yemen during the 2015 phase of the war when front lines were actively shifting. The battle reflected the fractured nature of Yemeni military loyalty, with regular army units split between the two competing governments and fighting on opposing sides.
