Significance

The Battle of Custoza (1848) was one of two engagements fought at the same location near Verona in the course of the Italian unification struggle. Occurring during the First Italian War of Independence, it represented a defeat for the Kingdom of Sardinia against Austrian forces under Radetzky, who outnumbered the Sardinian army of Charles Albert and Eusebio Bava by roughly eleven thousand men. The battle's outcome reinforced Austrian dominance in northern Italy during this phase of the conflict and checked Sardinian ambitions to drive Habsburg forces from the peninsula.
