Battle of Curtatone and Montanara

Significance

The Battle of Curtatone and Montanara took place on May 29, 1848, during the First Italian War of Independence, the broader conflict in which the Kingdom of Sardinia and Italian volunteers sought to contest Austrian control over the Italian Peninsula. Tuscan forces, whose strength ranged from several thousand to a substantially larger contingent depending on the source, engaged in action that formed part of the wider volunteer and allied effort alongside Piedmontese regular troops. Casualties among the Tuscan contingent were significant, with recorded losses spanning a wide range across different accounts. The battle occurred within the Risorgimento struggle that had been set in motion by revolutions in Milan and Venice and preceded by the Sicilian uprising of 1848, all of which placed pressure on Austria's position in northern Italy.
