Battle of Curuzú

Overview

The Battle of Curuzú occurred between September 1 and 3, 1866 during the Paraguayan War. After the first Battle of Tuyutí, won by the Allies on 24 May 1866, an Allied council of war decided to use their navy to bombard and capture the Paraguayan battery at Curupayty.

Significance

The Battle of Curuzú, fought 1–3 September 1866, was a preliminary Allied operation during the Paraguayan War aimed at seizing a Paraguayan battery position in advance of a larger assault on Curupayty. It followed the Allied victory at the first Battle of Tuyutí on 24 May 1866, after which an Allied council of war resolved to use naval power to reduce Paraguayan fortifications along the river. The engagement represented part of the broader Allied effort to press their advantage after Tuyutí and open the way for further advances into Paraguayan-held territory. Paraguayan casualties reached 2,532 against a Brazilian force of approximately 4,500, indicating a significant disparity in losses that reflected the attritional pressure the Allies were bringing to bear on Paraguay's defensive positions during this phase of the war.
