Battle of Covadonga

Significance

The Battle of Covadonga, fought in 722 near Covadonga in the Picos de Europa, resulted in a victory for the Christian forces of Pelagius of Asturias over the Umayyad commanders Alqama and Munuza. The battle is traditionally regarded as the foundational event of the Kingdom of Asturias — the first Christian polity to emerge in Iberia following the Umayyad conquest of 711. In that framing, Covadonga marks the initial point of the Reconquista, the centuries-long effort by Christian kingdoms to reclaim the Iberian Peninsula from Umayyad rule, a process that would not conclude until 1492. The significance attributed to the battle derives less from its immediate military scale, which the sources do not record, than from its symbolic and political function: Pelagius's victory established a nucleus of Christian resistance in the north from which the Kingdom of Asturias and its successor states would eventually expand southward across Iberia over the following seven and a half centuries.
