Significance

The Battle of Clavijo is a legendary rather than historical engagement, fabricated or substantially mythologized in the chronicles of the thirteenth century. Historiographical criticism, including that of Juan Francisco Masdeu and the Diccionario de historia de España (1968), identifies the battle as an invention attributed largely to Archbishop Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada, who is believed to have conflated and mythologized data from other battles of different times and locations. The episode is considered broadly a mythification of the Battle of Monte Laturce. In the legendary tradition, it was fought near Clavijo between Christians led by Ramiro I of Asturias and Muslims led by the Emir of Córdoba. Despite its fictitious basis, the battle carried significant cultural weight within the Reconquista as a formative element of Spanish national historical identity and was associated with the origin of the pilgrimage of the Way of Saint James.
