Battle of Coatit

Overview

The Battle of Coatit was fought on 13 January 1895 between Italy and Ethiopian proxies led by Tigrayan Prince Ras Mengesha Yohannes in what is now Eritrea. It was the opening battle of the First Italo–Ethiopian War, and was a significant victory for the Italians, as they rebuffed an invasion force.

Significance

The Battle of Coatit, fought on 13 January 1895 in what is now Eritrea, opened the First Italo-Ethiopian War. Commanding roughly 3,883 troops, Giuseppe Galliano repulsed a force under Tigrayan Prince Ras Mengesha Yohannes estimated at 12,000, inflicting approximately 1,500 Ethiopian casualties. The Italian victory checked the initial Ethiopian invasion and established early Italian momentum in the conflict, demonstrating that colonial forces could hold against a numerically superior regional adversary. As the war's opening engagement, Coatit shaped the operational posture of both sides in the campaign that followed and would culminate in the decisive confrontation at Adwa in 1896.
