Battle context

The Battle of Claye occurred during the War of the Sixth Coalition as Coalition forces advanced toward Paris in March 1814. The engagement produced a contested result: some sources attribute a victory to Prussia, while others suggest the outcome favored France. Notably, the French force of approximately 3,000 was perceived by the Prussians to be considerably smaller, yet French troops inflicted substantial casualties on the Prussian side, with Prussian losses ranging by some accounts to four times the French figure. The ambiguity of the outcome reflects the fragmented, fast-moving nature of the campaign's final weeks, in which multiple engagements were fought in close succession as Napoleon attempted to defend the approaches to the capital with reduced and overstretched forces.
