Significance

The Battle of Ciudad Real, fought on 27 March 1809, resulted in a French victory for General Sébastiani's force over the Spanish army under the Count of Cartaojal. With roughly equal forces engaged on each side, the French success produced sharply asymmetric losses: Spanish casualties reached 3,000 against an opposing force of comparable size. The outcome extended French control deeper into southern Spain during the early consolidation phase of the Peninsular War, further eroding organized Spanish resistance in the region.
