Battle of Chora

Significance

The Battle of Chora was fought in Chora District, Uruzgan Province, in June 2007 between ISAF forces — primarily Dutch troops alongside Afghan allies — and Taliban-affiliated anti-coalition militias. The contest centered on the district's administrative center, which held strategic value as a key ground route connecting Gizab District in the north to the provincial capital of Tarinkot. Holding or losing Chora had direct implications for Taliban freedom of movement across Uruzgan Province. Press reports at the time characterized the engagement as the largest Taliban offensive of 2007 in Afghanistan, underscoring the scale of pressure ISAF and Afghan forces faced in the province that year. The battle resulted in the death of one Dutch soldier, along with approximately 50 to 80 civilians and 70 Taliban fighters — a casualty profile that reflected both the intensity of the fighting and the costs borne by the local population during contested district-level engagements.
