Battle of Chacabuco

Overview

The Battle of Chacabuco, fought during the Chilean War of Independence, took place on February 12, 1817. The Army of the Andes, from the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata and led by Captain–General José de San Martín, defeated a Spanish force commanded by Rafael Maroto. This victory was a significant defeat for the Captaincy General of Chile, the royalist government established after the division of the Viceroyalty of Peru.

Significance

The Battle of Chacabuco delivered a decisive blow to the Captaincy General of Chile, the royalist government that had governed the territory since the collapse of the earlier patriot administration. The Army of the Andes, drawn from the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata and commanded by San Martín, inflicted casualties of 500–600 on a Spanish force of no more than 2,450 while sustaining only 132 of its own, a disparity that effectively shattered royalist military control in central Chile. The victory opened the way for the reconstitution of an independent Chilean government and established the Army of the Andes as the dominant military force on the Pacific side of South America, advancing San Martín's broader strategic aim of removing Spanish power from the continent's southern cone.
