Battle of Buceo

Significance

The Battle of Buceo was a decisive naval engagement fought off the coast of Montevideo during the Argentine War of Independence. An Argentine fleet commanded by Irish-born William Brown clashed with a Spanish fleet under Admiral Sierra over several days in May 1814. The engagement resulted in significant Spanish casualties, with the Espagne accounting for 500 losses. As a naval contest close to Montevideo, the battle bore directly on control of the Río de la Plata approaches and the broader struggle between Argentine independence forces and Spanish imperial power in the region.
