The Battle of Camden was a decisive British victory in the Southern theater of the American Revolutionary War, delivering a severe blow to Continental forces in the Carolinas. British forces under Lord Cornwallis routed the numerically superior American army commanded by Major General Horatio Gates approximately four miles north of Camden, South Carolina, inflicting roughly 1,000 casualties on a force of some 4,000 men. The defeat followed the earlier British capture of Charleston and further consolidated Crown control over the Carolinas, leaving the Southern states with diminished organized resistance. Gates's failure at Camden effectively ended his command reputation and deepened the Continental Army's crisis in the South, forcing a reassessment of American strategy in the region.
