Significance

The Battle of Calderón Bridge was a decisive engagement in the Mexican War of Independence, fought on the banks of the Calderón River approximately 60 kilometers east of Guadalajara. The insurgent force under Hidalgo, Allende, Aldama, and Abasolo numbered around 35,000 but suffered casualties estimated between 1,200 and 13,000, against roughly 1,000 on the royalist side commanded by Calleja del Rey, whose force was substantially smaller at 5,000–8,000 troops. The scale of the disparity in losses relative to force sizes points to a significant royalist military advantage in discipline or firepower. The battle's designation as decisive marks it as a turning point that curtailed the early insurgent momentum that had built around Hidalgo's movement since 1810, shifting the operational balance in favor of the Crown in the central conflict of the independence struggle.
