The Battle of Buda in 1686 was fought between a Holy League force of 65,000–100,000 and an Ottoman garrison of approximately 7,000, under commanders including Charles V, Duke of Lorraine, Louis William, Margrave of Baden-Baden, Paul I, Prince Esterházy, and Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg on the Holy League side, and Abdurrahman Abdi Arnavut Pasha and Sarı Süleyman Paşa for the Ottoman Empire. Despite the pronounced disparity in force sizes, Holy League casualties reached approximately 20,000 against Ottoman losses of around 3,000, indicating the severity of the fighting relative to the defenders' numbers. The engagement formed part of the broader Holy League campaign to roll back Ottoman control of Hungary during the Great Turkish War, a conflict that would ultimately result in the Habsburg recovery of large portions of the Hungarian kingdom from Ottoman administration.
