Battle of Bucha

Significance

The Battle of Bucha was fought as part of the broader Kyiv offensive, in which Russian forces sought to encircle the Ukrainian capital. Control of Bucha was an element of that encirclement strategy. Russian forces held the city from late February until withdrawing at the end of March 2022, when the offensive on Kyiv collapsed. The Russian withdrawal from Bucha and surrounding areas marked the failure of the opening phase of the 2022 invasion's principal strategic objective: the rapid seizure of Kyiv. The battle gained international attention in the aftermath of the Russian withdrawal, contributing significantly to the diplomatic and political trajectory of the war.
