Battle of Bomboná

Significance

The Battle of Bomboná was part of the Pasto Campaign, a series of Gran Colombian military operations conducted between 1822 and 1824 against Royalist strongholds at San Juan de Pasto and Patía in what is now southern Colombia. The campaign represented one of the sustained efforts to dislodge entrenched Royalist resistance in a region that proved resistant to Colombian independence forces. Gran Colombia committed roughly 3,000 troops against an opposing Spanish imperial force of around 2,200. Colombian casualties ranged from 115 to 343 against approximately 250 on the Royalist side, suggesting the engagement was costly relative to its scale. The battle's place in the broader Pasto Campaign reflects the difficulty Gran Colombia faced in consolidating control over southern territories even as independence was being secured elsewhere on the continent.
