Significance

The Battle of Bereza Kartuska was part of the broader Polish–Soviet War, the conflict that determined the eastern frontier of the newly reconstituted Second Polish Republic. Fighting occurred at the village of Bereza Kartuska on two separate occasions: first on 14 February 1919, and again during a more extended engagement between 21 and 26 July 1920. The recurrence of fighting at the same location reflects the fluid and contested nature of the front during this war, in which control of towns and villages in the borderlands changed hands repeatedly as each side launched offensives and counteroffensives across a vast and poorly defined front.
