Battle of Baiji (October–November 2014)

Overview

The Fall of Baiji was a battle that took place in and around Baiji, Iraq in June 2014. It was fought between Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) forces and those of the Iraqi government. Its first stage included clashes in the city from 11 to 18 June. The second stage was fighting over the control of Baiji oil refinery from 18 to 21 June. Initially, ISIL captured both the town and parts of the refinery, but on 19 June 2014, the Iraqi Army reinstated full control of the refinery in a counter-attack. Fighting continued in Baiji until October 2015, when government forces finally established full control.

Significance

The Battle of Baiji, fought from late October 2014 through October 2015, centered on control of the city and its strategically vital oil refinery. Iraqi forces retook the city in mid-November 2014 and re-entered the refinery, but ISIL recaptured Baiji on 21 December 2014 and placed the refinery under siege again, illustrating the contested and grinding character of the broader Iraqi Civil War. The final Iraqi recapture of Baiji on 22 October 2015 carried significant operational consequences: it gave Iraqi forces complete control of the highway running from Baghdad to Baiji, securing a critical logistical corridor, and positioned Baiji as a forward base for a prospective assault on Mosul. Control of the refinery also carried economic weight within a conflict in which ISIL derived revenue from captured energy infrastructure. The back-and-forth over the city underscored the difficulty Iraqi forces faced in consolidating territorial gains against an adversary capable of sustained counterattack.
