Battle context

The Battle of Austerlitz, fought on December 2, 1805, was one of the most significant engagements of the Napoleonic Wars and a decisive moment in the War of the Third Coalition. The battle, also known as the Battle of the Three Emperors, brought together approximately 158,000 troops from the French Empire and the combined Russian and allied forces under Emperors Napoleon, Alexander I, and Francis II. French casualties numbered between roughly 8,500 and 9,300, while Russian losses reached an estimated 27,000 to 36,000, reflecting the scale of the coalition defeat. The engagement effectively shattered the military capacity of the Third Coalition and established French dominance over continental Europe at that stage of the Napoleonic Wars.
