Battle of Aguadulce

Battle context

The Battle of Aguadulce was a major Liberal victory during the Thousand Days' War, notable for the scale of the disparity between the opposing forces and the severity of Conservative losses. A Liberal force of approximately 1,000 men under General Benjamin Herrera defeated a Conservative army of roughly 6,000 based at Aguadulce, inflicting some 3,000 casualties on the larger force. The engagement demonstrated that the Liberal army retained offensive capability and battlefield effectiveness against numerically superior Conservative positions, even as the broader war ground toward its conclusion in 1902. The outcome at Aguadulce reinforced Herrera's standing as a principal Liberal commander and reflected the contested nature of the war across Panama, then still a Colombian department.
